FAQ - SPEEDBALL PUFF MODIFIER

What is Speedball Puff Modifier and what does it do?
Speedball Puff Modifier is an ink-modifier that you mix into your Chalkology® Ink and/or Paste to create a raised, dimensional (or “puffed”) effect. When you heat-set the color with a heat gun after application, the additive causes a textured, 3-D appearance. Note: This product does not replace standard Chalkology® Ink or Paste, but enhances it with dimension.

What materials/surfaces does this work on?
Use it with Chalkology® Ink on fabrics/apparel and other heat-safe surfaces (just like standard Chalkology® Ink) or Chalkology® Paste on hard surfaces. Be sure the surface can tolerate the required heat-setting step—if it cannot, the puff effect may not hold.

How do I mix the Puff Modifier with Chalkology® Ink/Paste?

  • Start with selecting your preferred Chalkology® Paste or Ink. Stir it gently, then move the desired amount from the jar to a Color Tray for mixing.
  • Add a small amount of Puff Modifier and mix thoroughly until the color is uniform. The more you include, the more “puff” your project will have. Here’s a great video for illustration.
  • Apply your ink-modifier mixture to your Transfer as usual.
  • Let the application dry before moving or using the piece.
  • Important: Because you’re using a modifier, test your mixture on a small piece first to ensure your desired effect and surface compatibility. We also recommend taking notes on the color + modifier ratio + surface + heat-set method so you can repeat your results and share your techniques with others. The modifier may impact the final color.

How much Puff Modifier should I use?
There’s no fixed “one size” ratio—it depends on your desired puff level and surface. Many tutorials suggest starting low and increasing as you test. If you use too much, you may get overspill or uneven texture.

What are common mistakes and how to avoid them?
Some tips:

  • Applying too much ink/paste and/or modifier may cause overspill, messy edges or weaker adhesion.
  • Not smoothing the ink/paste properly during application can cause the raised texture to be uneven or “mushed”.
  • Heat-setting too soon (before drying) or using too cool a temperature may cause the puff effect to be underwhelming or not durable.

Is the puff effect permanent? Will it wash/hold up over time?
When properly applied, dried, and heat-set, yes—just like Chalkology® Ink/Paste’s usual durability, the puffed texture becomes a permanent part of the design.
